On February 22, 2024, history was made when the Odysseus lander successfully touched down on the surface of the Moon. The mission, which was launched by Intuitive Machines and funded by NASA, marks the first time a private company has landed a spacecraft on the Moon.


The Mission:



The Odysseus lander was launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on February 15, 2024. After a seven-day journey, the lander entered lunar orbit on February 22 and began its descent to the surface. The landing was successful, and the lander touched down at approximately 5:30 PM EST in the Malapert A crater near the Moon's south pole.


The Lander:


The Odysseus lander is a six-legged robot that weighs approximately 1,400 pounds. It is equipped with a variety of instruments and sensors, including a camera, a radar, and a magnetometer. The lander will use these instruments to study the Moon's surface and environment.
